a) Den Gefrierpunkt senken (z.B. durch Streusalz).

t[sek] = 487600[J] / 1200[W]
= 406,3[sek]
= 6,77[min]

Drinving safely by geothermal energy
If the temperature outside is lower than the melting point of water, ice is formated. Often this happens very quickly on bridges, as these buildings cool down much faster because of their large surface and the heat conductivity of metal. To guard against the formation of ice, there are two ways possible:
a) Lowering the melting point (f.e. by road salt).
b) Increasing the temperature (by heating).
The last, at first sight strange way, was choosen for this bridge. It is Germany’s 1st bridge heated by geothermal energy - That is cheap and doesn’t produce any CO2-emissions. Under its asphalt there is a close net of pipelines, filled with a fluid, that is temperatured by geothermal energy.
1) Where does geothermal energy come from?
2) How much energy is “economised” - compared to a “regular” heating-system?
1)Where does geothermal energy come from?
The temperature of the ground is increasing with depth: Ordinary the temperature is increasing about 3°C by each 100m. The real numerical value can differ: From 9°C by each Kilometer in Southafrica to 90!°C by each Kilometer in recent vocanic Arias, f.e. in Swabia or Tuscany.
The numerical value depends on the radioactivity, chemical processes in Coal- and Oil-Deposits, volcanic activities and the thermal conductivity of the stones. Salts, f.e. have a high thermal conductivity. That’s why the temperature in saltdomes is often higher than in the stones nearby. The biggest part of geothermal energy is caused by radioactivity. In the earth’s interior unstable isotopes of uranium, radium, thorium and potassium decay producing alpha and beta radiation and enormous amounts of heat.
2)How much energy is “economised” - compared to a “regular” heating-system?
The energy Q, that is needed for heating a body, can be calculated using the following formula (neglecting the cooling down):
formula 1: Q = L ⋅ B ⋅ H ⋅ ρ ⋅ c ⋅ Δθ
Further is assumed, that using geothermal energy the temperature of asphalt is increased 5°C and that the heights of asphalt is 5cm - 0.05m.

For heating a 1m x 1m - piece of asphalt 5°C, the necessary thermal energy can be calculated like this:
Q [J] = 1[m] ⋅ 1[m] ⋅ 0,05[m] ⋅ 2120[Kg/m3] ⋅ 920[J/(kg⋅°C)] ⋅ 5[°C]
= 487600 [J]
A thermal energy of 487600 Joule is needed.
How much is this - compared to “normal” life?
One Joule is the energy, that is needed for the engine power of one Watt for a single second. The following formula can be used:

conditions to log:
1) surface of the asphalt:
Define the lenght and the breadth of the asphalt-area inside of the bridge heads. Using just your GPS is adequate. A folding rule is not needed.
2) Calculation of the geothermal extracted energy:
Calculate the thermal energy Q, that is necessary for increasing the asphalt’s temperature 5°C. Therefor put the lenghts and breadth, defined for task 1, into the formula 1.
3) How much energy is this or how much time do you need to produce the same energy with your hair blower?:
Go into your bathroom and have a look at your hair blower. How much power [W] does it have? Calculate for how long you should use you hair blower to set the same amount of energy free, as the geothermal heated bridge does. Use formula 2. Pictures of your hair blower are welcome! .
4) Picture (optional, but very welcome)
Take a photo of you or your GPS-receiver in front of / under / above / besides the bridge, to prove, that you have been there indeed and load it up together with your log.
If this photo is showing you AND your HAIR BLOWER, you will be honoured by being placed into this cache’s Hall of Fame!
Please, send the answers of the tasks 1,2 and 3 to me via my profil. You will get the permission to log as soon as possible. If you are going to fulfil the conditions for the Hall of Fame, please tell me in your email. Thank you!
Have fun
