After a few seconds Teddy opened up his eyes and looked up. He had fallen down a big hole in persuit of the squirrel. To make it worse that pesky squirrel was nowhere to be seen. Mummy couldn't reach him and he couldn't get out. "I need to go home and get something to get you out with Teddy, I'll be back as soon as I can" Mummy said softly.
Teddy was relieved that she wasn't angry with him, but wasn't feeling very confident that she would be back anytime soon. Mummy disappeared. "Thought you could catch me, eh?" bleated a little voice to the East.
Teddy snarled. His instincts kicked in and the fluffy little ball was now in the perfect place to play with. Around, and around, and around the hole Teddy chased the squirrel with a evil glare in his eyes. The squirrel scurried up the side and up to ground level. Staring down into the hole all he could see was a very worn out little doggie.
"Happy now are we?" laughed the squirrel in a cool, calm, and collected voice.
Teddy was too busy struggling to get his breath back to reply.
"Listen rat-boy," howled the squirrel, "I'm curious. You're a rodent, I'm a rodent. I don't see why we can't just all get along. We have enough to do gathering nuts for the winter without all you dogs running after us at every opportunity you get."
Teddy gasped. He was frightened and afraid he'd be stuck in the hole forever. He didn't need this smug little squirrel poking fun at him. "READ MY LIPS! I'M NOT A RODENT! I'm a terrifying terrier!" he howled back.
"Don't make me laugh," giggled the squirrel, "the only thing terrifying about you is your breath"
Teddy was furious, he clambered up the hole as fast as his little paws would carry him... and then promptly slid straight back down again.
"HA HA! You failed! You can't catch me!" taunted the squirrel, waving his little tail in Teddy's face.
Teddy gave it another go and clawed his way almost to the top before tumbling straight down again.
"HA HA! Failed again!" wailed the Squirrel.
A tear filled the corner of Teddy's eye, "I'm never going to get out of here. I'm never going to see Mummy again!"
Suddenly the Squirrel felt slightly sorry for the little dog stuck in the hole.
"Hey calm down buddy, I was only messing with you. I can help you out, but on one condition... You promise to never ever, ever, ever, chase us squirrels EVER again! Capeesh?" offered the squirrel.
"Never, ever, ever?" queried Teddy
"Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, never, ever!" echoed the squirrel.
Teddy spent a few seconds churning over the proposal before nodding his head.
"Right, we have a deal then!" the squirrel said very contented, "COME ON BOYS!"
A flood of squirrels scurried down from the trees and out from the undergrowth and lined up next to the hole. One by one hazelnuts, acorns, conifer cones, and various berries were passed along the squirrel line and dropped into the hole. Very slowly, but surely the little dog was raised up on the bed of squirrel supplies. Despite the odd hazelnut in the eye, Teddy's ride to the top was a smooth one.

"Thank you my friend!" yelled Teddy.
"That's ok little dog. But remember our promise." yelped the squirrel as he ran back into the trees.
"Teddy you're out!!!" screamed mummy as she rushed towards the hole and gave him a big hug, "how on earth did you get out of that hole?"
She glanced down at the mound of nuts that now occupied it.
"Nuts? The squirrels... No, of course not," Mummy pondered in a very undecided tone, "come on Teddy, I'll carry you home".
Teddy peered over mummy's shoulder as the group of squirrels watched from the trees. Teddy smiled, and the squirrels smiled back. Teddy vowed to himself that he would keep his promise, however felt extremely relieved that it hadn't been a rabbit that saved him, as they're much more fun to chase!!! Some little dogs never learn their lesson...
