4:45 P.M. Friday October 29th,
2010
Please note that
the hike to the cache IS the event and not the get together
afterwards. To get credit for the event you need to come along for
the hike or meet us at the site of NH#1 Mines
Follies.
On October 29, 2000 a geocacher named
Paul Lamere placed a container and log book in
Mine Falls Park in Nashua, and thus introduced Granite Staters
to an activity that has become an addiction for so many of us. FTF
on the state's oldest cache was
bobhogan who logged a find on Christmas Eve of 2000. Since that
time, this cache has had 659 finders and New Hampshire now boasts
6250 caches currently published. All that because someone left some
Tupperware in the woods with the hopes that perhaps other people
might be willing to seek it out. Some additional caching stats of
numbers of cachers who have logged at least 200
finds:
Massachusetts: 715 cachers with Rocking the Goat at the top,
finding 12,534 caches to date.
Maine: 372 cachers with MSCREP at the top, finding 5991 caches to
date.
New
Hampshire: 392 cachers with Highpointer and Capiti at the top,
finding 11,345 caches to date.
World-Wide: 105,299 cachers with Alamogul at the top, finding
46,725 caches to date.
Bright Shining Stars contacted me with regards to setting up an
event honoring the state's oldest cache, and I immediately agreed
that this was a "stellar" (get it - it's a star-related joke) idea.
Come help us celebrate this cache turning 10-years old. We will
meet in the parking lot at the posted coordinates and hike in to
the cache (about .54 miles each way along well-graded level paths).
Those who have not yet logged it will of course be able to do so,
but we will be dropping off a new log book and welcome anyone to
sign it. Unfortunately, the original has been lost to muggling. It
is important to note that Groundspeak's rules prohibits an
organized event for the purpose of finding a cache. Logging an
event and finding of a cache are two separate things. This is an
organized hike to celebrate New Hampshire's oldest cache turning
10-years old. We will be staying at the site where NH#1 Mines
Follies is located for about an hour. In order to get credit for
the event, you must come for the hike or meet us at the site of the
final for the event activities. We apologize for having to hold the
event so early in the afternoon on a Friday, but today
IS the actual anniversary of the publication and
unfortunately it's getting dark early enough that we had to
schedule the start time for 4:45. We do hope you can join us; it
looks like we'll have a good turnout and these events are always a
lot of fun; plus you get to meet many of the people whose names
you've been seeing in the log entries of many of the caches you've
been visiting and the cache owners who placed them are often in
attendance.
After the event, everyone is welcome to join us
at 23 Blossom Street (N42° 45.164 W71° 28.309), which is about 1.5
miles away as the crow flies. It is a private home where we have an
empty 3-bedroom apartment on the first floor available to us. It's
about 500-600 square feet of space so it should easily be able to
accommodate 50 people or so for a couple of hours. From the event
parking, go onto Rt. 3S and take exit 5E. You will be on Kinsley
Street, a one-way street, headding in the right direction. Blossom
Street runs parallel to Kinsley St; one street over to the right.
Parking may be something of an issue and I'd recommend checking out
Madison St. or some of the other side roads right there and walking
over to a large red house. Please note that there is no parking on
the side of the street that the house is located on. Once there,
walk up the driveway to the first door on your left and come on in.
Also note, if you haven't done
"Nashuan's First Cache" (GC1D56C), it is a two-part multi
that finishes REALLY, REALLY close to here. Don't bother to look
for WP1, we'll get you to the final ;
)
We will be ordering pizzas and for whoever wants
them and are asking for an $8/person donation to cover the expense.
We have sodas and water on site but feel free to bring any food or
drinks you would like. We only have a few folding chairs, so if you
want to sit, I'd suggest bringing your own. Originally, we were
planning to meet at Estebrook restaurant, but are hoping that this
change in venue will allow for more people to spend the evening
with us in a more relaxed atmosphere.
Here is a screen shot of our expected hike for
the event:
We hope you can join us
