Prior to having the pier, during Summer, the strong South Easterly winds would cause all the sand to be washed away from the beach area. Thus, the idea behind the pier was to provide a groyne to stop the sand erosion and to build up the beach. In addition, the pier was built to promote tourism by creating a place for the public to walk which would give a scenic view of the city. At night, the view of the city and the sea is spectacular.
The pier has been successful and the sand erosion has been curbed - Humewood Beach continues to be one of the most popular of Port Elizabeth's beaches.
