Geocache Description:

Black Crag is a delightful fell which commands spectacular panoramic 360 degree views of the whole of the Southern Lakedistrict. The fell is relatively easy to climb being only 322 metres high, but on a clear day, the rewards are very high indeed.

The summit of Black Crag can be reached on foot from several directions. The shortest and our favourite ascent starts from the lane which runs from The Drunken Duck to Skelwith Fold. Only 500 metres along the lane North West from the Drunken Duck - a footpath leaves the tarmac through a large 5 bar gate with a walkers gate to the side. Follow this stoney track uphill for a couple of hundred metres until it starts to dip downwards. Just beyond the high point a path leaves the main track and heads up to the right, through the trees of Pullscar Woods. The path crosses a wire fence and finds its way delightfully up to the summit of Black Crag, passing a very distinctive stone cairn on the way. This path is not marked as a right of way on the OS map but it is on open access National Trust land and follows what appears to be a well made and frequently used route in years gone by.

On arriving at the summit of Black Crag, the 360 degree views are quite spectacular and are well worth lingering over. The geocache is about 25 metres from the summit and comprises a standard picnic box containing a log book and various small nik nacks.

The descent can be back by your route of ascent, or strike off on a path towards Iron Keld, where there is a good path that loops back down towards Pullscar Woods. Or extend your walk towards Tarn Howes and the delightful Tom Heights.
