The Riviere des Pirogues is on RP3, about a 40 minute drive from
Noumea. This is the road to Yate, crossing the southern part of
Grande Terre. It is a lovely mountainous drive.
There are three different approaches to this cache.
1. walk along the west side of the Rivier des Pirogues, and
cross at the ruins of the bridge (the Pont des Japonais).
2. Go over the hill along a dirt road (OK for 4wheel drive) -
turn right up the steep dirt road just after crossing the Rivier
des Pirogues on RP3.
3. Keep going past the steep dirt road and turn right at the
next dirt road - drive towards the third electrical pylon from the
river and park just beyond it. Then follow the path down to the
tributary and turn right along the overgrown ruins of the old
railway. This is a nice walk along the river with some good picnic
and camping areas. I have added waypoints for his route since it is
the one we always use.
You are at the cache site when you are on the old railway path
on the north east side of the riviere des Pirogue and to the west
of the tributary that enters here, you can see the foundations of
the old bridge and through the trees you can see the cascades on
the tributary. Visit 360Cities.net to see an interactive sphere image of the
cascades at the treasure site. Be sure to click fullscreen and
then click and drag on the image to look all around.
