Jardín Botánico y de Aclimatación. En la carretera del Botánico encontramos una de las joyas históricas y culturales de la ciudad, producto de la Ilustración española. El Jardín Botánico y de Aclimatación de La Orotava fue creado en 1792 por el Marqués de Villanueva del Prado por orden del rey Carlos III, para establecer en Tenerife los plantíos que permitieran aclimatar especies procedentes de América y Asia, ya que los ensayos realizados en los reales jardines de Aranjuez y Madrid no deparaban los éxitos esperados debido al rigor del invierno. Este jardín, que cada año recibe más de 300.000 visitas, reúne una interesante colección de 1.5000 especies subtropicales. Además, cuenta con una biblioteca especializada, un herbario con 30.000 exicatas, un banco de germoplasma, un vivero y otras instalaciones que lo convierten en importante un centro de investigación científica. El Gobierno de Canarias tiene previsto acometer en breve un proyecto de ampliación que duplicará su extención. Desde el punto de vista histórico, puede decirse que el Jardín Botánico fue el primer atractivo o reclamo turístico del Puerto de la Cruz, pues ya desde el siglo XIX era principal y obligada visita para todos los viajeros o excursionistas extranjeros que llegaban a la isla abordo de los vapores fruteros.

Nestled in the Orotava valley, just above Puerto de la Cruz is the "Jardin de Aclimatacion de La Orotava". Jardin Botanico, as it is commonly known, was created in 1788 to acclimatize plants from different places around the world, with the final destination to Europe.
This magnificent garden's flora collection spans five continents and it is a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle, and the heat for that matter.
Bring your camera and give yourself the time to truly explore all the species including orchids, birds of paradise, a gigantic banyan tree, palms of all sizes, and the fragrant guavas.
Attention! The cache is well camouflaged. Good eyes are beneficial. The cache betrays himself. Please don´t forget a pencil!

Der Botanische Garten war zwar nicht als touristische Einrichtung geplant ist aber seit Jahrhunderten Anziehungspunkt für auswärtige Besucher. Der „Jardín de aclimatación de La Orotava, wie der Garten heute noch heißt, liegt nicht in Orotava, sondern am südöstlichen Ortsrand von Puerto de la Cruz. Er wurde im Jahr 1788 im Auftrag des Königs Karl III. durch Alonso de Nava y Grimon VI. Marqués Villanueva del Prado angelegt. Der Ort wurde so gewählt, dass der Garten sich einerseits nahe am Hafen befand, um die Pflanzen aus Übersee nicht weit transportieren zu müssen. Andererseits sollte er auf einer Höhe von ca. 100 m über dem Meer liegen an einer Stelle an der genügend Wasser zur Verfügung stand. Nachdem der Garten im Laufe der Zeit sehr verwahrlost war, wurde er nach 1860 durch die Anstrengungen des Schweizer Obergärtner Hermann Wildpret zu einem Garten mit internationalem Ansehen. Der Jardín Botánico steht heute unter der Leitung des Kanarischen Institutes für Landwirtschaftliche Forschung.
