The church of St Giles is built of flint rubble with ashlar
dressings, and roofed with tile, the spire being shingled. The
external flint work of the building is beautiful, and the tall
spire soaring heavenwards in its shingle covering is typically
Sussex. The Church is briefly mentioned in the Domesday Book, in
the late 12th century it consisted of a chancel, nave and north and
south aisles shorter than present. The tower was added in the 13th
century, but with the exception of the tower and the nave arcades,
the whole church was rebuilt as a memorial to Bishop Samuel
Wilberforce in 1874 and reconsecrated in 1875. As a result, from
the outside at least, the Church appears modern.
The above co-ordinates are for the first question. When was the 1st
Baron of Woolavington born? 184A. When did he die? 19B5.
Cross the road to the larger part of the churchyard. You will
find a map of the graves (there is a box in the lower left-hand
corner - see if the name included there amuses you too!!).
Near the map is the headstone for the Coopers. One died as a
prisoner of war on Oct C, 191D.
Use the map (or have a wander around) to locate the grave of
David John Page. You will find out how he, tragically, died. He was
born on E0th June and died on F6th December.
You can now find the cache at N 50 56.(E+F)CA W000 40.DBE.
If anybody would like to expand this series please do, I would
just ask that you could let sadexploration know first so he can
keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid
duplication.
