Geocache Description:

Aoyagibunko is the first public library in Japan which established at castle town of the Sendai clan from end of Edo period to Meiji restoration.
Bunzou Aoyagi who come from Sendai clan presented books and funds to Sendai clan, then 1831, public library established at Sendai clan medical school.
After disuse, that place used to Sendai military police, Sendai central police station then now built Hiagashi Nibanchou Square.

青柳文庫は仙台藩の城下町に幕末から明治維新まで存続した日本初の公共図書館です。
仙台藩出身の青柳文蔵が仙台藩に書籍と資金を献上し、それを広く活用させるために、1831年(天保2年)、藩の医学校があった場所に公開の文庫として設けたのが始まりです。
仙台藩医学校の構内に青柳文庫は設置されていました。
文庫の廃止後、跡地は仙台憲兵隊、そして仙台中央警察署に使用され、現在は東二番丁スクエアが建っています。
