The cache is located partway up one of the trails leading up Eliot Mountain, named for Charles Eliot, who was credited with the idea of preserving and protecting scenic lands on Mount Desert Island, which would later become the basis of Acadia National Park.
The cache is a rectangular Rubbermaid container, suitable for small T.B.'s and small trade items. It is hidden under several cut logs near a large flat area on one of the trails on Eliot Mountain. To get there, you will need to drive to Thuya Gardens, and take the trail from there. There is a monument honoring Charles Eliot about .2mi. beyond the cache site, and a short distance beyond the monument is benchmark #PE1902(Savage Mt.) Eliot Mountain and the cache site can be found by hiking alternative trails. See a trail map of the area for additional routes. Eliot Mt. Cache is the oldest cache on Mount Desert Island and one of the oldest in the State of Maine.
