Výstavba úseku dálnice D3 Tábor–Veselí nad Lužnicí zahrnuje soubor staveb, jehož realizací jde k vybudování približne 26 kilometru dálnice D3, a to v regionu velké jihoceské aglomerace, tedy úseku, který je po soucasné silnici I/3 považován za jeden z nejhorších, co se týce dopravní zatíženosti. Z intenzit dopravy, které byly zjišteny pri pravidelném celostátním scítání dopravy v roce 2005, vyplývá, že stávající silnice I/3 mezi Mirošovicemi a Benešovem je již dnes pro stávající provoz kapacitne nevyhovující. Denní intenzity v tomto úseku dosahovaly v roce 2005 hodnot pres 24 tisíc vozidel/den v obou smerech. Dálnice D3 se po svém dokoncení stane soucástí doplnkové síte evropských dopravních koridoru TINA, pricemž pres naši republiku prochází také mezinárodní silnicní tah E55, který vede ze Skandinávie pres Nemecko, Cesko, Rakousko a Itálii do Recka. Celý tento tah je v provozu v dálnicních parametrech krome úseku dálnice D8 pres Ceské stredohorí a úseku dálnice D3 Praha–Linec. D3 soucasne prebere funkci kapacitního spojení Prahy s oblastí jižních Cech, napojuje Táborsko a Ceskobudejovicko na republikovou sít dálnic a rychlostních silnic a ve smeru na jih na silnicní a dálnicní sít v Rakousku. Celková délka tahu dálnice D3 a navazující rychlostní silnice R3 mezi Prahou a státní hranicí s Rakouskem je približne 171,40 km. Úsek trasy mezi Prahou, Táborem a Ceskými Budejovicemi až po mimoúrovnovou križovatku (MÚK) Trebonín je pripravován jako dálnice D3 a úsek mezi MÚK Trebonín a státní hranicí s Rakouskem jako rychlostní silnice R3.
