Geocache Description:

Cache is located very near a new memorial to the 19 servicemen and civilians who lost their lives on July 11, 1944 in South Portland, Maine when a USAAF medium bomber crashed into the densely populated "Redbank" area.

This accident on the U.S. Homefront near the end of World War II has the unfortunate record for the most deadly place crash in the history of the State of Maine.

The crash of a USAAF A-26 Invader medium bomber on a long range training mission from Barksdale, Louisiana happened at the site of this memorial at MacAurthur Circle and Westbrook Streets in South Portland.

At the time of the crash, the area had been built up with many temporary houses and trailers which were used to house the giant influx of civilian workers into the area for the nearby Liberty Shipyards building ships for the U.S. Merchant Marine to carry supplies to our armed forces and allies over seas.

Cache is located on public property, about 40 feet from the memorial. The memorial is very easily accessed and can be seen clearly from cache GZ.

Cache is a micro and is located in a high muggle risk area, so please be stealthy. Also bring your own pen, as cache is too small and well hidden to have a pen with it.

Please be careful when you retrieve cache and place cache as hidden to avoid any muggle issues.
