Visiting Conneaut Lake has been part of my family history for as long as I can remember.
Growing up, I spent several weeks each summer here, and have enjoyed bringing my children back as often as I can. I hope that you will take time to enjoy this wonderful place and learn something new about it in the process.
There is parking available just a few feet from the cache, so this could take as little or as much time as you would like.
Conneaut Lake was formed as a kettle lake at the end of the Pleistocene (The Last Ice Age), during which a large block of ice broke off the receding ice front and was surrounded by accumulating sediment. After the ice melted, the resulting depression was filled with water forming the lake.
Water flows into Conneaut Lake through Inlet Run, a small stream on the north end of the lake & exits through the Conneaut Outlet, a larger creek which flows to the south through the Conneaut Marsh.
The Conneaut outlet flows into French Creek, making it part of the Mississippi River drainage.
For the size of the lake, it has an oddly shallow depth in most areas. Most of the time it is around 15 to 20 feet deep. However, in some places it has been known to reach over 50 feet. It's deepest depth is 81 feet.
