Geocache Description:

Sur le plateau du Pays d'Aillon se dresse un mamelon : le mont d'Aillon (tiré de la famille d'Aillon ou d'Ailou), qui a donné son nom au château ainsi qu'au village.
Le château de Montaillou fut bâti par les seigneurs d'Alion vers la fin du XIIe siècle.
Ce village a une riche histoire cathare.
En effet, quelques décennies après le massacre de la forteresse de Montségur, il persiste en Corbières ainsi qu'en haute Ariège, et notamment à Montaillou, une communauté gnostique essentiellement encadrée par les "Bons-Hommes" ou parfaits tels que Pierre Authier, Raymond de Castelnau ou Philippe d'Alayrac.
Après maintes péripéties, une grande partie des habitants à migré en Catalogne et en Pays valencian où ils ont formé une diaspora active et plus ou moins dirigée par Guillaume (Guilhem) Bélibaste. Les persécutions menées par l'évêque Fournier de Pamiers, et futur Pape, auront bientôt fait d'éradiquer cette poche d'hérétiques.

Un grand coup de coeur pour ce petit village et ses habitants et une cache pour vous faire découvrir le château de Montaillou... ou du moins son donjon ou tour carrée, aussi appelée "Le Fort".
Nous sommes sûrs que, comme nous, vous trouverez ici un accueil amical et généreux !

A savoir : ici se trouve le studio de Radio Montaillou, ainsi que les quartiers généraux de l'Association "Le Castellas", (créée en 1994) qui a beaucoup oeuvré pour les recherches sur le site.

On the plateau of the Pays d'Aillon, a hillock stands: Mount Aillon (from the d'Aillon family or Ailou), who gave its name to the castle and the village.
The castle of Montaillou was built by the lords of Alion in the late twelfth century.
This village has a rich Cathar history.
Indeed, several decades after the massacre of the fortress of Montsegur, there persisted in the Corbières and the high Ariège, including Montaillou, a Gnostic community essentially supervised by the "Good Men," or perfects such as Pierre Authier, Raymond de Castelnau or Philippe d'Alayrac.
After many adventures, many of the inhabitants migrated to Catalonia and the Valencian Country, where they formed an active diaspora, more or less led by Guillaume (Guilhem) Bélibaste. Persecution conducted by Bishop Fournier of Pamiers, the future Pope, will soon eradicate this pocket of heretics.

We really liked this little village and its inhabitants and decided to hide a "treasure" to make you discover the castle of Montaillou ... or at least its keep or square tower, also known as "The Fort".
