Geocache Description:

This event location is in Ringwood State Park, near Bear Swamp Lake, at the Cannonball trail head. This park is only open during daylight hours. The event will be a gathering beginning at 9:30AM and ending at 10:10:10AM.

Start your hike early enough to get there in time! There are plenty of caches and lots to explore on the way to and in the area around the event location. We'll chat about the area, the connected parks, and geocaching here, of course!

You may NOT drive on Bear Swamp Road. It will require a hike to get to this event. You may see that Bear Swamp Road appears to lead to the event location, however it is not for your use. It is normally closed by locked gate and is for Camp Yaw Paw & Utility Company access only. Even if you find the gate open, it is not legal for you to drive on.

The "best" approach to the event location will be from the main Ramapo Valley County Reservation parking area on Route 202. You would take the Silver -> Orange (Schuber) -> Red/Silver -> Blue trails. This hike is about 2.75 miles, mostly uphill, with a total elevation gain of about 600 feet (round-trip is about 5.5 miles).

Following the gathering, there will be an *optional* group hike of the entire length of the Cannonball trail. From the event location, the hike of the Cannonball trail is about 7.5 miles (so your total hike would be just over 10 miles). The good news is that the trail is "mostly" downhill when hiking in this direction. There is a bail out point on Skyline Drive, if you don't want to hike the entire trail - but you'd have to arrange transportation.

If you are interested in joining the post-event hike, please post your interest in a will attend log as soon as possible. You will want to park at the Barbara Drive parking area in Pompton Lakes and get a ride to the main Ramapo Valley County Reservation parking area on Route 202. If you are willing to shuttle other hikers please post that in your note as well.

Carrying a 10 pound cannonball (or bowling ball) on your hike is not required - though is suggested.

Please remember that these connected parks are home to all sorts of wildlife, please be observant & cautious. I have run across black bear, snakes, deer, and lots of TICKS here (amongst many others).
