Biokovo – Nature Park
Biokovo mountain has been proclaimed a nature park in 1981, at a
total land size of 19 550 ha. Unique geomorphology, particular
beauty of scenery, and exceptional biological diversity were
crucial in its proclamation.
There are few mountains in the word that have drawn close to the
sea so impressively, and so easily made possible to the visitor
beautiful panoramatic views from its summits, the highest of which
is S. Jure at 1 762 meters.
The vegetative world of Biokovo is very rich and peculiar. At
different altitudes and in different circumstances differnt forms
of vegetation have developed, from the mediterranean to the alpine.
For Biokovo and the surrounding Biokovo area more than 1 500
species of vascular plants are recordet and among them is a
significal numer of rare, endangered and protecte species, endemics
and relicts whose growth has certainly been made possible by the
specific life conditions. Special attention belongs to endemics
like the dwarf bellflower, a pointed knapweed and other similar
plants. It has been found that some areas and localities in the
Park have special attributes and significance, so they are
separated as special botanical reservations, geomorphological
reservations and reservations of forrest vegetation.
The animal life of Biokovo is diverse, and abounds in numerous
endemics and tertiary relicts. The underground fauna of Biokovo is
especially interesting, and among more than 120 cave organisms more
than half are endemics. The butterfly fauna with 221 species found
thus far is particularly interesting. Amphibians are represented in
Biokovo by 7 species, and reptiles by 21 species, the most
prominent of which are the horned viper. Some rare speices of bird
are also prezent, like the golden eagle and the short-toed eagle.
This is the permanent residence of the wolf, the fox and the wild
boar, and an especial attraction are the chamois and mouflons. The
fauna of mammals is made interesting by the presence of not less
than 13 species of bat, all of which are rare, protected and
endangered.
All the typical phenomenons of karts are present in a great
measure – limestone cracks, rockfoils, caves, pits, ice
– pits and karst sink- holes, at whose beds are found
fruitful tiny karst sinkholes, in which even today the famous
biokovo potato is grown.
The ruin of pastoral dwelling, which can be seen along the
Biokovo road, testify to the living connection between Biokovo and
the surrounding population. A 23 km long asphalt road leads to the
very top of Biokovo. So that only at a half-hour drive from any
place of the Makarska riviera you can reach the beautiful
belvederes, from which this part of Dalmatia is seen plainly. From
the highest peak of Sv. Jure a beautiful view stretches toward the
Dalmatian Background and the mountains of Bosna and
Hercegovina.
An integral part of the Biokovo Nature Park is the botanical
garden Kotisina, at the foot of Biokovo, only 3 km from the towen
Makarska.

Biokovo –Park prírody
Pohori Biokovo bylo prohlaseno parkem prirody v roce 1981, Jeho
celkova rozloha je 19 550 ha. Jedinecna geomorfologie, osobita
krasa krajiny a vyjmecna biologicka ruznorodost byly rozhodujici
pri jeho prohlaseni.
Ve svete je malo pohori, ktere se tak impresivne priblizily k
mori a tak umoznily navstevnikum prekrasne panoramaticke vyhlidky
ze svych vrcholu, ze kterych je nejvyssi Sv. Jure s 1 762 m.
Rostlinny svet Biokova je velmi bohaty a jedinecny. Na ruznych
vyskach a v ruznych podminkach se rozvinuly ruzne druhy vegetace
– od mediteranske do alpske. Na Biokovu a v biokovske oblasti
se registruje vice nez 1 500 druhu vaskularnich rostlin, mezi nimiz
je i velky pocet vzacnych, ohrozenych a chranenych druhu, endemitu
a reliktu, k jejichz rozvoji prispely i specificke zivotni
podminky. Vlastni pozornost si zaslouzi endemity, jako jsou
modrousek, nacervenala chrpa biokovska a dalsi. Je potvrzeno, ze
nektere oblasti a lokality v Parku maji sve vlastni vlastnosti a
vyznam, takze se vyclenuji jako vlastni botanicke rezervace,
geomorfologicke rezervace a rezervace lesni vegetace.
Zivocisny svet Biokova je pestry a oplyva cetnymi endemity a
tretihornimi relikty. Zvlaste zajimava je podzemni fauna Biokova
– mezi vice nez 120 jeskynnimi organismy je dokonce vice nez
polovina endemitu. Velmi zajimava je fauna motylu s dosud
potvrzenym 221 druhem. Obojzivelnici jsou zastoupeny 7 druhy a
plazi s 21 druhem, mezi kterymi je nutno zminit zmiji ruzkatou.
Pritomne jsou i nektere vzacne druhy ptaku, jako je orel skalni a
orlik kratkoprsty. Je zde i stale misto vyskytu vlka, lisky a
prasete divokeho. Zvlastni atrakci jsou kamzici a mufloni. Fauna
savcu je zajimava pritomnosti 13 druhu netopyra, ktere jsou vsechny
vzacne, chranene a ohrozene.
Na Biokovu jsou ve velke mire pritomne vsechny typicke fenomeny
krasu – skrapy, kamenice, jeskyne, propasti, ledenice a
ponikve neboli kotlinky, v jejichz podnozi se nachazeji plodne
doliny, ve kterych se jeste dnes pestuje znamy biokovsky
brambor.
O zivotni provazanosti Biokova a okolního obyvatelstva svedci i
zriceniny pastyrskych staveni, ktere lze videt podel biokovske
cesty. K samemu vrcholu Biokova vede 23 km dlouha asfaltova cesta,
takze je mozne za pouhou pulhodinu jizdy autem z kterehokoli mista
na Makarske riviere prijet k prekrasnym vyhlidkovym mistum, ze
kterych se vidi Dalmacie jako na dlani. Z nejvyssiho vrcholu Sv.
Jure je prekrasny vyhled na dalmatske vnitrozemi a na
bodensko-hercegovinska pohori.
Soucasti Parku prirody je i botanicka zahrada Kotisina, která se
nachazi v obci Kotisina, v podnozi Biokova, vzdalena jen 3 km od
mesta Makarska.
