Geocache Description:

The Prestreljenik window is one of the Julian Alps natural rock windows. You can reach it by a secured path ascending from south into it. You can continue to the summit of Prestreljenik or Visoki Kanin.

Prestreljenik and its Window

The window and name of the Mountain are connected. The name of this mountain is sort of funny and it means "the shooted through". This is due to a big rock window in the west ridge of a mountain.

Several legends describing the formation of the window have been preserved. Here are two of them:

  • Devil, who in a dense fog and with full speed bumped into the mountain, creating with his horns a big hole in it.
  • Once upon a time, God punished the world by flooding it. Only Noah was saved; he was floating together with the animals. After a long time God remembered Noah and stopped the rain so the waters started to subside. That is when the mountain of Prestreljenik peeked out of the water, and Noah was in a difficult position because he did not know where to tie his boat. God saw Noah’s distress, so He placed his index finger on the left and his thumb on the right and pressed his two fingers together. That is how He made the window. Noah took a rope from the boat, put it through the hole and happily tied up his vessel.

Geological history

The Julian Alps are located in NW Slovenia and structurally belong to the Julian Nappe where the Southern Alps intersect with the Dinarides. In the Jurassic, the area was a part of the southern Tethyan continental margin and experienced extensional faulting and differential subsidence during rifting of the future margin. The Mesozoic succession in the Julian Alps is characterized by a thick pile of Upper Triassic to Lower Jurassic platform limestones of the Julian Carbonate Platform, unconformably overlain by Bajocian to Tithonian strongly condensed limestones of the Prehodavci Formation of the Julian High. The Prehodavci Formation is up to 15 m thick, consists of Rosso Ammonitico type limestone and is subdivided into three members. The Lower Member consists of a condensed red, well-bedded bioclastic limestone with Fe–Mn nodules, passing into light-grey, faintly nodular limestone. The Middle Member occurs discontinuously and consists of thin-bedded micritic limestone. The Upper Member unconformably overlies the Lower or Middle Members. It is represented by red nodular limestone, and by red-marly limestone with abundant Saccocoma sp. The Prehodavci Formation unconformably overlies the Upper Triassic to Lower Jurassic platform limestone of the Julian Carbonate Platform; the contact is marked by a very irregular unconformity. It is overlain by the upper Tithonian pelagic Biancone (Maiolica) limestone. The sedimentary evolution of the Julian High is similar to that of Trento Plateau in the west and records: (1) emergence and karstification of part of the Julian Carbonate Platform in the Pliensbachian, or alternatively drowning of the platform and development of the surface by sea-floor dissolution; (2) accelerated subsidence and drowning in the Bajocian, and onset of the condensed pelagic sedimentation (Prehodavci Formation) on the Julian High; (3) beginning of sedimentation of the Biancone limestone in the late Tithonian.

How to obtain the log-permission

  • Reach the Prestreljenik window with the secured path
  • Guess the approx. size of the window when you are standing in it (there is fantastic view to Italian side).
  • Is Prestreljenik the highest summit in Kanin subgroup of Julian Alps? If yes note the height, if not note the name and the height of the highest.
  • Send the answers to the questions to my account, and you will get the permission to log if everything is correct.
  • Add a photo of yourself with your GPS and the Prestreljenik window to your log after you get the permission

More information

You can shorten part of the way with the cable-car from Bovec (Slovenia) or with the other one from Sella Nevea (Italy).

  • Odgovore na vprašanja pošljite preko mojega profila in ce so pravilni, boste dobili dovoljenje za vpis.
  • Ko prejmete dovoljenje, k svojemu vpisu dodajte svojo sliko z GPSom pri Prestreljenikovem oknu.
