The Great Way has no gate;
there are a thousand paths to it.
If you pass through the barrier,
you walk the universe alone.
(Wu Men)
This is a short enough hike in the Garden County but it can be a
little deceiving for the unwary.
I am grateful to Windsockers for their assistance while placing
this cache.
I first spotted this small mountain, Slievecorragh, while placing a
cache on the neighbouring Church Mountain.
Apart from the walk up the "hill" the central figure in this cache
is St Kevin as you will see him presiding over all about you. He
has a close association with the village of Hollywood. Obviously he
slept around a bit because he has a bed in Glendalough and another
one here as well as a chair. The OS map will also indicate the
presence of a motte very closeby.
By coincidence we found another chair, bronze I think and stuck
fast in the ground, at the top of Slievecorragh which no doubt you
will find fascinating as we did. I guess it is a memorial of some
kind with the name Dan Clancy clearly etched on it and a man's ring
attaching a small lonely teddy bear to the chair. There was
something sad about it and no doubt a local history but perhaps
that is for future finders to discover.
To find the cache you must go to the coordinates above and find the
year that William Beaghan died on May 12th. Call this ABCD.
Stage 2
Secondly you must go to N53 05.313 W006 35.842 and find a reference
to Fr Kavanagh CC with a date. Call the year EFGH. To access this
area you must pass through a gate at N53 05.430 W006 35.700 and
walk a few hundred metres.
I would ask you to be EXTREMELY
careful at stage 2 of this cache and for this reason I have
excluded children in the attributes above!!
The final cache is near the summit of Slievecorragh at the
following coordinates:
N53 04.BC(D-1) W006 35.(EFGH+75)/13
Some helpful info:
When I placed this cache I walked to the summit by passing through
a gate to the mountain at N53 04.582 W006 35.517 at a point called
Scalp on the map. Although it is a close route to the top (approx
600m), at certain times of the year the bracken can be high this
way and the walking is rough and tough with plenty of opportunities
for twisty ankles, especially coming down. Thick bracken can often
be home to ticks also so be aware. It is this route that gives the
cache its terrain rating
It is also worth noting that there is a slightly closer route
through some farmed fields not far from this Scalp and there is a
gate with a bridle path indicated. Please be aware that at the time
of placing the cache THERE WAS A LARGE BULL IN THE FIELD AMONG THE
COWS!!!
At N53 05.125 W006 34.915 there is a much easier but longer track
(approx 1K). At these coordinates you will go through private
looking gates (with eagles on top of the pillars) but about 30
metres inside you will find a Coillte forest track with a barrier
going off to the left. This winds its way to a boggy path which
reaches the summit without difficulty. Either way the journey to
the summit and down again should be done in about an hour and a
half.
From Mountain Views:

summit in Ireland.
Do not start the trek without
all the proper mountain rain gear, waterproof boots and the
guidance material, compass, map, GPSr with mapping etc.
Please note that all parts of this cache are hiked at your own
risk. The cache owner takes no responsibility of any sort for any
reason including accidents or
mishaps.
Please be aware that cars parked
in areas close to walking trails are vulnerable and they can be
vandalised or stolen. Unfortunately this is an ongoing problem
which is extremely difficult to solve, so there is a risk involved.
I have heard recently that many hiker groups are parking at the
nearest population centres and getting taxis to and from the start
points at very little expense.
Please observe the country code to the best of your ability. Local
landowners often generously allow access to upland areas across or
through parts of their private property. Please, please be
conscious of this and return the courtesy by keeping all gates
closed, immediately and not on your way back!. Please use the gates
where appropriate but if you have to climb over them then use the
hinged side ONLY.
Please do not cause any damage of any sort to fences or barriers
along the way.
