One of the most beautiful and impressing waterfalls of iceland is Dynjandi (which means "the thunderer") located in the westfjords at the end of Arnarfjödur.
The West Fjords of Iceland originated during a series of volcanic eruptions which took place during the Tertiary period, about 14-16 million years ago, depositing succesive layers of basalt and lava slag in this area.
Dynjandi was "built" at the end of the last glacial era which ended about 10.000 years ago. The advance of the glacier had carved deep fjords in this land, leaving behind layers of rock of varying degrees of hardness. In the main valleys the glaciers could dig in and form the earth more effectively than in the side valleys because of their huge mass. When the ice melt away, there were different levels between the main and the side-valleys. This formed the cascades building many of icelands waterfalls, especially Dynjandi.
Talking about this lovely place: There are several waterfalls over a total height of 186 meters, taking their water from the river "Dynjandisá" . The first and highest one is Fjallfoss, followed by Hundafoss, Strokkur, Göngumannafoss, Hrisvaðsfoss, Bjarfoss (on the informationboard you can find the names of more falls, but normally this ones aren't mentioned in the travel-guides, and even for the names we have written here you can easily find alternatives).
Nowadays Dynjandi is a protected Nature-Monument, but it was discussed to use the river Dynjandisá for a power plant, which surely would have destroyed or dried up Dynjandi.
Dynjandi is also the name of a farm in this area, which was in residence till 1951. It had a triangular pool, built in 1887. The purpose of the pool is not known (most possibly bathing or washing).
There is a hiking-trail up to the falls beginning at the campsite on the right of the river.
