ExploreWV Geocoin Challenge Kickoff

The West Virginia Department of Education and the Arts, West Virginia Division of Tourism, and the West Virginia Division of Culture and History have partnered to promote the ever growing sport of geocaching across our beautiful state. This geocoin challenge is the first of many challenges to be released through this partnership.

This event will be official kickoff for the ExploreWV Geocoin Challenge. The ExploreWV Geocoin Challenge will consist of 30 caches placed throughout the state. Ten of these caches focus on West Virginia museums, 10 will take you to historic markers/places, nine will take you to tourist hot spots, and then the capstone will be the REQUIRED West Virginia State Museum Cache.

In order to receive the geocoin, cachers must complete five caches in each of the categories plus the State Museum, making a total of sixteen required cache finds. For those ambitious cachers who wish to complete all 30 caches, an additional prize will be awarded.

IF YOU ATTEND THE EVENT, you will be given an official "Playbook" which includes a crossword puzzle to be filled in on your journeys throughout the state. You will also receive a complimentary cachepack with geocaching necessities.

Documentation using the Playbook is REQUIRED. Each cache will have a keyword that fits into the corresponding crossword clue. If you are unable to attend the event, and wish to participate in this challenge, please contact Robin Taylor through the ExploreWV username listed above to receive an official Playbook, or visit the official webpage and use the fill in form. Please note that the website is currently under construction and will be online in the coming weeks. Also please note that there will be another kickoff event on September 25, 2010 from 12:00 - 2:00 pm at Coopers Rock State Park. The event listing is GC2E5FN.

The first 250 cachers to properly document 16 of the 30 caches, and mail their Playbook to ExploreWV will receive a specially designed geocoin commemorating this challenge. Limit one geocoin per household. The first 50 cachers to complete all 30 caches will receive a fold up camping chair with the ExploreWV logo.

This event will be held rain or shine. In the event of rain, festivities will be moved indoors to the lower Rotunda of the State Capitol. Along with this event, there will be refreshments, information booths, and a guest speaker.

Photobucket We are pleased to announce that a special guest appearance of Signal the Frog, the official geocaching mascot, will be at the event. He is coming to Charleston to visit with the local caching community. His goal is "To meet Geocachers and have my picture taken with them. If you meet Signal, please have your picture taken and post your picture in your Discovered log."
