Geocache Description:

Finding this cache will take you on a beautiful hike to Lake Alice and teach you something about this very unique lake. To access the lake, take highway 232 northeast from Cokeville, then drive a 28 mile dirt road. About a mile before the campground and trailhead the road crosses a creek, so a high clearance vehicle is recommended. The trailhead starts at Hobble Creek Campground and from there it’s a 1 1/2 mile hike up a somewhat steep trail.

Lake Alice was formed thousands of years ago when a landslide dammed Poker Creek. The creek became a lake behind the natural dam, but there is no visible outlet from the lake. Instead of an outlet like a usual lake, the water filters underground through the landslide and eventually comes out of the ground before meeting up with Hobble Creek.

Because the lake is isolated from outside influence of other fish, it remains the home of the only known pure lake strain of naturally-reproducing Bonneville cutthroat trout. The water is very clear and the fish are easily seen from the trail that circumambulates the lake.

To log your find, go to the listed coordinates along the trail where you’ll see the water flowing out of the rocks. Snap a picture of your group with the water flowing out in the picture. Then continue your hike to the lake and you'll come to an informational sign (see waypoint below) that explains how the lake formed and how it got it's name. When you get to the lake, measure the exact distance the water travels underground by letting your GPS show you the distance to the listed cords. Email us the exact distance the water travels and how and when the lake got it's name - don’t put it in your log! Then post your picture in the log (this is optional).

If you want bonus points, post a picture of you in the frigid lake water! Don’t forget to fulfill these requirements cause we don’t want to have to be sticklers and delete your log.
