Geocache Description:

Yes, seriously! The Louisville Metro Police Department’s Bomb Squad has invited geocachers to meet with and learn more about what they do.
This event will occur at 2pm on 09/18/10 at the LMPD Training Academy, 2911 Taylor Blvd Louisville, KY 40208

Sgt Barry Denton of the Louisville Bomb Squad has requested a partnership between the Louisville Metro Police Department and Geocachers. The vision is for increased awareness and understanding between our groups. The hope is that fewer geocaches will be detonated, giving the Bomb Squad and the police more time and resources to devote to more true crime investigation and explosive detection.

Did you know that the Louisville Bomb Squad has detonated at least 5 geocaches in the Louisville area? I certainly did not and was very surprised to find that many of them were geocaches hidden in park areas. There have been suggestions throughout the explosive ordinance community about potentially pressing charges against geocache hiders - we absolutely want to garner an understanding and work with the Bomb Squad to avoid this idea becoming a reality. There is no reason that we cannot meet halfway to keep a balance. The easiest thing that we can do as geocachers is to clearly label our geocaches - simply by adding the word "Geocache" to the outside of the container in permanent marker will work wonders.

This will be an educational/informational session for geocachers to see all aspects of what happens when the unit receives a bomb call. Activities/demonstrations will include the inspection robot, video of the unit in action, special equipment and protective gear, and one of the K-9 bomb sniffing dogs will be present.

This is a wonderful opportunity for us and I hope to see everyone there. Watch this page for updates.

Please post your intention to attend and how many family members you will be bringing so that we can keep a good idea of how many to expect.
