First to See the Sun, Chatham Islands, New Zealand Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

jellybeanz: First to See the Sun has sadly had its time in the sun and now been archived. Following our departure from the island the cache was cache sat by friends who have now also moved on and so the cache no longer can be maintained. Since then this cache has been the subject of what I would guess as repetitive muggling. My thanks to visiting cachers who have kindly reinstated the cache in the past. It is a shame as I have been messaged by cachers planning to visit the island with the primary intent to log this remote cache. Hopefully in time another cache will be placed so another day will see geocaching on the island.

Geocache Description:

This cache is quite possibly the first cache in the world to welcome in each new day (GMT +12:45, summer +13:45).

The Chatham Islands rise from the Pacific Ocean just west of the International Date Line and east of mainland New Zealand. Of the ten islands two are inhabited by only 600 people. The islands are low lying and undulating with long quiet beaches and an abundance of fresh seafood.

From the cache site turn east and view the waters of Hanson Bay (Pacific Ocean), Te Whanga Lagoon, Lake Huro, and Waitangi Bay/Petre Bay (Pacific Ocean). The wide open Pacific Ocean separating the Chathams from mainland New Zealand will be easily visible to the west. Continue along the road for more coastal views or if heading out at the end of the day watch for one of the rarer sunsets when the cliffs glow.

You can pull off and park close to the cache but make sure you choose a good spot as the road is narrow in places and the verge can get more than a little muddy. Alternatively, the cache site is within a short bike ride or walk from the settlement of Waitangi.

The cache (accuracy 3m) is a 1 litre plastic container placed at ground level. When searching for the cache you do not need to cross any fences.

When placed the cache contained various child friendly or souvenir items. Please feel free to trade but please don’t leave trash.

You might as well go and start looking....
