Upper Douglas Cable Tramway: Broadway Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Southerntrekker: Hi There

As the owner has not responded to either my log or my colleague's previous log requesting that they check this cache I am archiving it.

Please note that once the cache has been archived, this can not be undone. This is explained in the Help Center - http://support.groundspeak.com//index.php?pg=kb.page&id=70

You will need to create a new listing, put it back in for review and as long as it meets today's guidelines and no other caches have been published in the area causing a proximity problem, then it will be published.

Regards

Geocache Description:

A cache located near the end of the route taken by the Upper Douglas Cable Tram.

Unlike the rest of the tramway which had 2 tracks, this last section of the line (from York Road) was single track and many trams terminated at the depot on York Road. Plans to link the cable tramway to the horse tramway here were never completed (it's said that the cable trams scared the horses!) In 1900, when the company operating the tramway went bust, Douglas Corporation took over running the line and this final section was soon closed as the steep incline was considered unsafe. The increased use of motor vehicles meant that by 1922 the Cable Trams only operated during the summer season and by 1929 the tramway closed permanently. The track was lifted in 1932 and of the 11 trams only 2 survived (turned into a bungalow at Jurby!) Parts from these 2 trams were later combined to create one complete cable tram (with a different number on each end!!). The tram can now be seen at the Transport Museum in Jurby and has been converted to run on battery power.

This cache is one of 3 I've placed along the route of the old cable tramway. It's a magnetic nano, located near to where the tramway would have ended. Please retrieve/replace carefully as the area gets very busy!!
