Rotterdam Toen - City Wall and Oldest Port

Vermoedelijk in de 8ste eeuw en zeker in de 9e vestigde zich de eerste mensen langs de rivier de Rotte. Tussen het huidige Hofplein en de Maas lag ooit de nederzetting Rotta, maar deze werd later weer overstroomd.

Rond het jaar 1270 werd de eerste dam (Hoogstraat) gebouwd en gingen de mensen op en rond de dam wonen, dit is het begin van het ontstaan van Rotterdam.		 Probably in the 8th century and certainly in the 9th the first people settled along the river Rotte. Between the current Hofplein and the Maas was once the settlement Rotta, but this was later flooded.

Around the year 1270 the first dam (Hoogstraat) was built and people were living on and around the dam, this was the creation of Rotterdam.

Rotterdam ontving in 1340 definitief stadsrechten. In 1358 kreeg de stad toestemming om de verdedigingswerken aan te leggen. Maar nog voordat met daaraan was begonnen, breidde de stad al snel uit tot het gebied tussen Coolsingel – Waranda - Blaak. De groei was te optimistisch ingeschat, want rond 1500 moest de uitbreiding ingeperkt worden tot de Goudse Singel.

Rotterdam heeft dan een rondom gesloten stadsmuur, met poorten en torens. Daarbinnen lag bij het Steiger de oudste haven van Rotterdam, waarvan de toegang aan beide zijden door twee torens werd ‘bewaakt’		 In 1340 Rotterdam received city rights. In 1358 the city got permission to build their defences. But even before it began, the town quickly expanded into the area between Coolsingel - Waranda - Blaak. The growth was too optimistic, since around 1500 had to be restricted to the expansion Goudsesingel.

At this time Rotterdam has a completely enclosed city wall, gates and towers. Inside lay the 'Steiger' Rotterdams oldest port. The access to the port was "guarded" on both sides by two towers.

In 1989 groeven de archeologen van het Bureau Oudheidkundig Onderzoek van Gemeentewerken Rotterdam (BOOR) de fundering op van een deel van de stadsmuur en de kleine toren aan de westelijke haveningang. De komst van het nieuwe NS- en metrostation Blaak was de reden voor deze opgraving. In 1989, archeologists of BOOR (Bureau Oudheidkundig Onderzoek van Gemeentewerken Rotterdam) found the foundation of part of the city wall and the small tower on the west side entrance. The building of the new railway and metro station Blaak was the reason for the excavation.

De stadsmuur was ongeveer 80 centimeter dik en had een verdedigende functie. De toren had een diameter van ongeveer vijf meter en was gefundeerd op een veelhoekig raamwerk van zware houten balken. Op de plaats van de muren waren korte heipalen of slieten, de bodem ingeslagen.

Rond 1600 zijn deze torens en muren alweer verdwenen. Dan breidt Rotterdam zich zuidelijk uit en komen hier nieuwe verdedigingswerken.		 The city wall was about 80 centimetres thick and had a defensive role. The tower had a diameter of about five metres and was built on a polygonal framework of heavy wooden beams. At the site of the walls they found short poles dashed in the ground.

Around 1600, these towers and walls had already been demolished as Rotterdam extended southwards where new defence walls were built.

Tussen 1449 en 1525 bouwde men de laatgotische Laurenskerk. In het vroeg- middeleeuwse Rotterdam was dit het enige stenen gebouw. Uit deze tijd (1360 eerste stadsmuren, 1525 latere bijvoegingen), is ook dit stukje muur in N.S. Station Blaak.

De restanten van de toren en de stadsmuur zijn na de opgraving bewaard gebleven en later teruggebouwd in het nieuwe station Blaak. Vanaf de roltrap zijn ze goed te zien. Zwevend boven de sporen verwijzen de muur en de toren naar het middeleeuws Rotterdam en zijn oudste haven.		 The late Gothic Laurenskerk was built between 1449 and 1525. Om te loggen moet je dit treinstation bezoeken, neem de zuidelijke ingang. Op het cachecoord kun je alleen door ramen van de piramide naar beneden kijken.

Op het tussendek vind je een informatiezuil en tafel met een kaart van Rotterdam uit die tijd. De toren en de oude stadmuur zweven boven het perron.

Beantwoord de volgende vragen:

B - Van de tafel loopt een markering naar de stadsmuur en de informatiezuil.
