Geocache Description:

This is a child friendly cache placed to celebrate Camden, ME author, illustrator and resident Chris Van Dusen. Park at the top of Mount Battie and follow your GPS. It has been placed off a rough trail. You don't need to be a mountain goat, but sturdy shoes suggested for clamoring over rocks.

Started this cache off with a lot of toys and 3 travel bugs! An autographed copy of "If I Built a Car" by Chris Van Dusen has been placed in the cache as a FTF prize!

CHRIS VAN DUSEN CACHE

This is the another in my series "Maine Authors and Illustrators". I am collecting autographed books and placing them as FTF prizes in Maine towns that the author/illustrator lives in or has written about.

I recently met Chris Van Dusen for the second time. The first was at my son’s elementary school and again today at the Bridgton Public Library.
He was at the library to celebrate their summer reading program by reading his newest book “Circus Ship.” (Candlewick Press 2009)

Chris Van Dusen was born in Portland, Maine, on March 17, 1960. He grew up in the small town of Raymond, Maine and now resides in Camden with his wife Lori, sons Ethan & Tucker and his yellow Lab Pearl.

You may not realize that you know his work – but if you have ever been to Maine, I am sure that you have seen it! Next time you are out and about in your car look at the license plate on the car in front of you. Chris was the illustrator for the very popular “lobster” plate! Ever read an LL Bean catalog – the cover may have been done by Chris, too!

Years ago Chris Van Dusen’s illustrations caught the eye of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. He illustrated a poster for their Bello the clown, known for his bright orange hair that stands on end!

Years later he would visit that circus theme again. Some twenty years ago a black & white print in Downeast Magazine caught his eye. It depicted the sinking of the Royal Tar – a circus ship. It was the elephant in the lower left of the picture that he noticed. There were 92 people on board the ship when it sank in Pennobscot Bay, killing 36 people and all the animals on board.

Chris liked the idea of a circus ship travelling off the coast of Maine – but he would make it have a happy ending this time! Check out his beautifully illustrated book, “Circus Ship” at your local library or bookstore!

After Chris read a couple of his books to the mesmerized crowd of kids and parents he graciously autographed my copy of “If I Built a Car”. I explained that I would be placing this book as an FTF prize in this cache! He knew what Geo-caches were – he and his kids had accidentally discovered a few while out exploring the woods around Camden. He was excited to think that there would be a “Chris VanDusen” cache out there!
