Geocache Description:

Cueva de Ambrosio

The Ambrosio cave is the largest cave located on the Hicacos Peninsula in Cuba. The Hicacos Peninsula is located on the northwest coast of Cuba approximately 140 Km west of Havana. The peninsula is composed of Holocene and late Pleistocene carbonate eolianites and reach 5 to 8 meters above sea level. The Ambrosio cave has 5 interconnecting galleries with many vertical and horizontal entrances. The horizontal entrances were likely formed as the hillside eroded away exposing the branches of the cave system. The cave was carved by the sea, into a limestone cliff called Loma La Caseta. The Ambrosio Cave is classified as a flank margin style and has many features associated with caves formed in saltwater-freshwater mixing zone environments.

The floor of the cave is covered in guano and there are numerous pits and crevices in the caves where bats can readily be spotted.

The Ambrosio’s galleries boast the largest collection of aboriginal pictographs in the Caribbean. The Siboney people carved the pictographs in red and black and feature concentric circles and stylised human figures. The Siboney people are believed to have been the first slaves to work the salt mine in the area. As their population declined, they were replaced by African slaves. During the colonial time period, the Ambrosio Cave became a refuge for escaped slaves.
