Vulcano Steinberg
The Steinberg is part of the volcanic field in the Hocheifel, whose most famous basalt mountains, the Hohe Acht - is at 747 m the highest mountain in the Eifel - and the Nürburg. It is a volcanic structure, which is about 35 million years older than the other volcanoes of the Laacher Lake area.
It is possible that the emergence of tertiary volcanoes in the Eifel may happen as following:
At first, built a cinder cone from basaltic slags. Then came the volcanic basalt melt in one "(intrusion) and solidified slowly to a club-or cup-shaped body, which is also referred to as a funnel top.
During the solidification process to form shrinkage cracks that break down the rock in multi-sided pillar. The diagonal and vertical pillars were dismantled entirely forthcoming, so that today only the nearby, almost horizontally stacked piers are to be seen. You look across the lake, the Königssee on their cross-sectional areas.
In contrast to the Quaternary, mostly basalts of the Tertiary is very hard. Here at Steinberg, the material was mined until 1942 and was used as ballast. During reduction of the Steinberg basalt infiltrating groundwater was pumped down continuously . During the war dismantling stopped, the pit filled with water and there was the Königssee.
After World War 2 the reduction was not continued.
