Geocache Description:

This cache is a follow on from ‘The last Season-End of an era’ cache celebrating Morecambe Football Club’s last season at Christie Park.

Morecambe FC sold Christie Park on Lancaster Road to the supermarket giant Sainsbury’s and with the money built the new state of the art ‘Globe Arena’. That’s not all that changed, the club badge formally the Morecambe Town crest has changed to the more simple shield with a shrimp on it. This represents the clubs nickname the ‘Shrimps’, not to be confused with the ‘Shrimpers’who are Sounthend Utd.

The ground is named after the clubs major sponsor, a construction company who also built it. What a great job they have made of it too, not only is it a great football ground but it has a large conferencing facility and public sports pitches to provide further revenue.

The approach to the Arena is named Christie Way after the Clubs benefactor Mr JB Christie who provided the original ground on Lancaster Road.

Morecambe Football Club was formed in 1920 and spent 87 years in the lower leagues then in May 2007 they gained promotion to the Football League via the Football Conference play off final at the New Wembley Stadium where they beat Exeter City 2-1. What a game that was, Wembley’s first season and only the second match played there, the day after the FA Cup final, it was a cracking game. 1-nil down, Morecambe missed a penalty, then equalised, then up stepped Danny Carlton to score what is arguably one of the best goals ever scored at our National stadium. The rest is history. You had to be there. I was, along with 11000 others from Morecambe!!

Morecambe have since established themselves in Division 2 finishing 11th in both their first and second seasons, then beyond all expectations finished 4th in 2009/10 season. They lost in the play-offs to Dagenham & Redbridge.

The first game at The Globe arena will be on Tuesday 10th August 2010 when they play Coventry FC in the 1st round of the Carling Cup. The first League game is on Saturday 14th August 2010.

Now down to the cache it is a simple one, a magnetic note pad, wheel chair accessible and easily doable on match day. Please always put the scroll back in the lid, use stealth when retrieving and replacing. Don’t forget your pen

Photos of the games and cachers in football shirts will be more than welcome.

Congratulations to the Slyneseekers for the FTF!!
