Originally, Fort Trigge built by the English in 1801 was built as an English stronghold on Sint Maarten built directly above Fort Amsterdam - and within firing range. The Dutch took the fort in 1802, and renamed it Fort Gelderland. The French subsequently took the fort in 1807 and named it Fort Louis Napoleon. The English took back the fort in 1810, and re-established Fort Trigge. Finally in 1816 is was taken by the Dutch and named Fort Willem - Until it was deemed too difficult to get supplies to, and abandonned in 1846.
From the fort you will get great views of Phillipsburg, the Great Salt Pond, and Fort Amsterdam.
Easy enough to see from town - but not exactly easy to get to or find! Bushwacking is impossible due to grade of hill and multitudes of cactii. Find the right route up!
Bring lots of water and a camera.
