JFH Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

TheBignells: Time for this one to go I'm afraid - glad it reached its 10th birthday, but after 2054 finds and the fact I no longer work in London, which makes maintenance that much harder - I'm going to release the spot for someone else to use.

Geocache Description:

This is a simple classic cache n’ dash, you are looking for a Magnetic 35mm container and please be sure to replace it out of sight and don't drop it.

JFH stands for James Forbes House which is a building that cannot be seen from the road – just its entrance hall off Great Suffolk St. through an old railway viaduct arch. This part of Southwark has the Charing Cross to London Bridge Lines being crossed by the Elephant & Castle to Blackfriars Lines, with a connecting line also at the coordinates – a lot of rail traffic passes this location.

The building name originates from a Victorian Railway Pioneer - James Forbes, who was the General Manager of the then London Chatham and Dover Railway Company who instigated the building of Snow Hill Tunnel which now houses City Thameslink Station, and connected the route through to Farringdon and the then Great Northern Railway. The route now is used by the Thameslink service between Bedford and Brighton.

The site of JFH is on the former Railway Depot called Ewer St. and the building does still have access onto the railway at the rear. The former depot buildings have since made way for a new student accommodation building recently built next door.

The building can just be seen if you stand in Dolben St. opposite the coordinates / by the pub!! It was classed as a temporary building, built in the year 2000 for additional office space and it is still home to some 400 people. Likened to being a port-a-cabin city it has 4 levels split into 3 x open plan blocks, its own delicatessen and is fully air conditioned.

GPS signal does go a little stray in this area, but hopefully GZ should be obvious.

Well Done to Lodgebarn for the fastest FTF I have ever seen.
