A ilha da Madeira formou-se à cerca de 18 milhões de anos, a partir de actividades vulcânicas subaquáticas que duraram cerca de 15 milhões de anos. A última fase de actividade vulcânica iniciou-se 500.000 anos atrás, tendo durado até 6.450 anos atrás. É difícil encontrar sinais da actividade vulcânica original devido à forte e continuada erosão causada pelos ventos e pelas águas.
Esta Earthcache pretende levá-lo até uma das poucas e bem preservadas crateras vulcânicas da Madeira. Apesar de ser acessível até ao fundo durante o verão, a cratera é inundada com água no inverno. Mas mesmo nesta altura vale a pena dar um passeio na berma da cratera.

Die Entstehung der Insel Madeira aus vulkanischer Aktivität eines unterseeischen Hotspots begann vor etwa 18 Millionen Jahren und erstreckte sich über 15 Millionen Jahre. Die letzte vulkanisch aktive Phase vor etwa 500.000 Jahren endete erst vor 6.450 Jahren. Wegen der auch heute noch allgegenwärtigen und starken Erosion durch Wind und Wasser ist es schwer, auf Madeira noch ursprüngliche Vulkankrater aus der Entstehungszeit der Insel zu finden.
Dieser Earthcache führt Dich zu einem der wenigen und dazu gut erhaltenen Vulkankrater Madeiras. Im Sommer ist der Krater bis zum Grund zugänglich. In den regenreichen Jahreszeiten ist der Krater mit Wasser gefüllt, ein Spaziergang auf dem Kraterrand lohnt sich aber auch dann.

The island Madeira arised 18 million years ago out of vulcanic activites of a submarine hotspot and lasts about 15 million years. The last active volcanig phase began 500.000 years ago and ends not until 6.450 years ago. It is difficult to find original volcanic craters on the island because of strong and still lasting erosions caused by winds and water.
This Earthcache wants to lead you to one of the few and well-preserved volcanic craters of Madeira. While it is accessible until the bottom in summer, the crater is filled up with water in winter. But also then it is worth doing a stroll on the crater rim.
