Geocache Description:

Deze cache is geplaatst in natuurgebied Den Inkel ter nagedachtenis van de Watersnoodramp van 1953 in Kruiningen, waarbij 62 inwoners om het leven kwamen.

This cache is hidden in the Den Inkel nature area in memory of the victims of the North Sea Flood of 1953 which killed a total of over 1800 people, 62 of them in Kruiningen.

In de herfst en winter of bij vochtig weer kunnen de bospaden erg glibberig zijn, wees hier dan ook op voorbereid.

Deze route en Den Inkel: Natuurgebied Reimerswaal sluiten feilloos op elkaar aan. Wanneer je beide caches hebt gevonden kun je ook nog doorgaan voor de Den Inkel: Bonus Cache.

Kruiningen (gemeente Reimerswaal) werd zwaar getroffen tijdens de Watersnoodramp van 1953; 62 inwoners kwamen om het leven en het gehele dorp kwam gedurende een half jaar onder de invloed van eb en vloed te staan. Er waren drie gaten in de dijk geslagen: het westgat, het oostgat en het gat in de veerhaven.

Op de plek waar de dijk was doorgebroken zijn enkele diepe spoelgaten ontstaan. Caissons werden gebruikt om de dijken te dichten (zie afbeelding). Een caisson is een holle betonnen bouwsel dat drijvend naar de plaats van bestemming gebracht wordt en daarna laat men het vollopen met water waardoor het op zijn plaats zinkt. Na het dichten van de dijk met caissons zijn er rond de spoelgaten zanddijken opgeworpen en werden in de omgeving vooral eiken en iepen aangeplant. Zo ontstond ook natuurgebied Den Inkel.

Start route

De tocht begint bij het monument ter nagedachtenis aan de watersnood (N 51°25.953 - E 004°2.358).
A = Noteer het jaartal waarin het monument geplaatst is en herleid dit tot één cijfer. Bijvoorbeeld 1965 -> 1+9+6+5 = 21 -> 2+1=3
B = De Schelde-Rhein route heeft een Fietsroutecode. Gebruik het tweede cijfer in de fietsroutecode.

Klim nog even de dijk op voor een fraai uitzicht over de Westerschelde. Aan de rechterhand de oude Veerhaven waar voorheen het veer Kruiningen - Perkpolder vertrok. Het oude havengebied wordt nu bebouwd. Uitkijkpunt N 51°25.941 - E 004°2.356

Loop vervolgens de dijk af richting het bos. De caisson waarmee de dijk gedicht werd is hier nog zichtbaar.
C = Je passeert richting het bos twee fietsrouteborden. Een van de borden verwijs naar een fietsknooppunt. Herleid dit getal tot één cijfer. Bijvoorbeeld 65 -> 6+5 = 11 -> 1+1=2

Vervolg het ruiterpad rechts het bos in. Hierbij passeer je een holle berkenboom. Je zou hier gemakkelijk een cache kunnen plaatsen, maar zo gemakkelijk maken we het niet. Laat deze aan je linkerhand liggen en loop nog ongeveer 150 meter door. Ga links een bospaadje in waarmee je langs het ven komt te lopen. Er ligt een steiger waarmee je een mooi uitzicht hebt over het ven. Uitkijkpunt N 51°25.959 - E 004°2.634
D = 3 x de letterwaarde van de vorm van de steiger. Herleid dit getal weer tot één cijfer.

Vervolg het bospad en ga na ongeveer 50 meter rechtsaf. Hierbij komt het bospad uit bij een bankje en prullenbak aan een grasveldje in het bos.
E = Het aantal houten onderdelen van het bankje x het aantal schroeven in de zitting x het aantal bouten ter bevestiging van het onderstel. Herleid dit getal weer tot één cijfer. Bijvoorbeeld 10 x 6 x 8 = 480 -> 4+8+0 = 12 -> 1+2 = 3.

Be careful when the weather is wet and cold because the trails through the nature area might be slippery.

Kruiningen (part of the Municipality of Reimerswaal), was hit hard during the North Sea Flood of 1953; 62 people lost their lives and the entire town was at the mercy of the tides for sixth months. The sea broke through the dike in three places: the east gap, the west gap and a large gap at the ferry port.

Several deep holes were carved by the force of the streaming water where the dike broke through. Caissons were used to close the dikes (see picture). A caisson is a hollow, concrete structure that is floated to its destination where it is filled with water to make it sink into place. Once the dikes were closed, embankments were created around the deep holes and oaks and alms were planted. This is how the nature area Den Inkel was created.

Start

The track starts at the memorial site for the victims of the North Sea Flood (N 51°25.953 - E 004°2.358).
A = Write down the year in which the monument was placed and reduce this number to 1 digit. e.g. 1965 -> 1+9+6+5 = 21 -> 2+1 =3
B = The Schelde-Rhein cycle track has a “Fietsroutecode”. Use the second number from the “Fietsroutecode”.

Climb the dike for an extraordinary view across the Westerschelde. You can see the old ferry harbour on your right side, where the ferry from Kruiningen to Perkpolder used to depart. The old site is now being remodelled with houses and flats. Waypoint N 51°25.941 - E 004°2.356

Turn your back to the memorial and start walking down the road. One of the caissons can still be seen.
C = When you walk from the memorial to the caisson, you pass 2 signs that mark cycle tracks. On one of them you can find the number of the nearest "fietsknooppunt". Reduce this number to one digit. e.g. 65 -> 6+5= 11 -> 1+1=2

Now continue to the right, onto the horseback riding trail into the nature area. Although you pass several objects that could easily carry a cache, we haven’t made it quite that simple. After you pass a hollow birch tree, keep on walking for about 150 more meters and then turn to your left, onto a small trail that takes you along the shore of the lake. There is a small pier that leads into the water, which provides a magnificent view across the lake. Waypoint N 51°25.959 - E 004°2.634.
D = 3 x the letter value of the shape of the pier. Reduce this number to a single digit once again.

Continue along the trail and turn right after approximately 50 meters. The trail ends on a small field with a bench and a garbage can.
E = The number of wooden parts of the bench, multiplied with the number of screws in the seat, multiplied with the number of bolts that are used to fasten the legs. Reduce this number to a single digit. E.g. 10 x 6 x 8 = 480 -> 4+8+0 = 12 -> 1+2 = 3.
