Visions of the future
The Sandton city shopping centre is linked to the Nelson Mandela Square via a walkway over 5th street. It was built as a pioneer centre in 1973.
If you enter Sandton city from this side of Sandton square, you will see the signs to the Da Vinci hotel and suites close to the information desk on your left. Continue past the escalator that goes down to the Marco polo casino. Across the cellular service centre you will find the stairs (and lift) going down to the reception area of the new Da Vinci hotel. Take a speedy ride
Hop 5: The Gautrain is an exciting enhancement to the transport system in Gauteng. The construction of the Gautrain started in September 2006. The first two rail cars of the Gautrain arrived in Durban on 3 December 2008. The train has 96 rail cars and 15 were built in the UK. The remaining 81 rail cars were built in South Africa as part of a job creation initiative that created 93,000 jobs. The line from the O.R. Tambo international airport to Sandton opened on 8 June 2010. The remaining lines to Hatfield in Pretoria and Park station in Johannesburg are scheduled for completion in 2011.
