This cache has been archived.

Dalesman: This cache has been in need of care and maintenance for some time and as the owner has not responded to my note I am archiving it.

Guidelines:**You are responsible for occasional visits to your cache to maintain proper working order, especially when someone reports a problem with the cache (missing, damaged, wet, etc.). You may temporarily disable your cache to let others know not to search for it until you have a chance to fix the problem. This feature is to allow you a reasonable amount of time - normally a few weeks - in which to check on your cache. If a cache is not being maintained, or has been temporarily disabled for an unreasonable length of time, we may archive the listing.**

Geocache Description:

A cache at the site of Penshaw Monument (formally the Earl of Durham Monument).

Note the proper cache is currently missing and awaiting replacement, however a cacher has kindly installed a replacement to find in the meantime Penshaw Monument is a Doric tetra style monument and is a half size replica of The Temple of Hephaestus in Athens. Construction was started on the site in 1844 and in 1939 the 5th Earl of Durham donated the monument and the surrounding hill to the National Trust. Penshaw Monument is one of the best known landmarks in the North East of England being easily visible from both the A1(M) motorway and A19 upon approaching the area from the south. A climb up the hill offers commanding views of the area. The cache is not located within the monument itself, but very near by. The terrain has been given a mark of 3 as, while not particularly difficult, the final climb up to the top of the hill is quite steep but should be manageable by any able bodied person, although you might need to stop to catch your breath at the top! Thank you to the National Trust who kindly gave their permission to site the cache here. If you enjoy this cache and location, please mark it as a favourite!
