Geocache Description:

Another Railroad History Cache in PA.

This cache is located almost directly across Crum Creek from The Thomas Leiper House, but you can't cross the creek.

Along the trail you will pass under the Chester Road Bridge This is approximately where the Leiper Quarry was.

The original railway ran from a point above the quarry in Wallingford, near the present end of Somerset Ln.near the condominiums to the west and down to the Ridley Creek dock. It's the first surveyed railway in the U.S. The horse drawn railway brought stone to the southern end of the railway and to Ridley Creek - the only navigable waterway for barges to the Delaware River.

The Railway was replaced by a canal that ran along the Crum Creek. This was one of the only times a canal replaced a railroad.

Parts of the trail you will be following is roughly the path (within 100 Ft) of the Leiper Canal (See this web page for details: (visit link) )

The canal was replaced in 1850 by a spur of the B&O Railroad. It is the remnants of that roadbed we still see in bridges and earthworks. The trail itself is a utility access for the Central Delaware County Sewer Authority and a couple of petroleum lines.
(thanks to Renaisanceman)

This is a nice mostly quiet walk along the creek. I saw plenty of deer tracks and i scared up a "well fed" beaver from his hiding place, so be on the lookout for wildlife.

The Southern end of the railroad, is also the first stage of my Multi-cache: "More Railroad History (GCZ58Q)"

Don't worry about Baseball Muggles, when entering or leaving.

I have included parking coords and trail entry coords. The trail-head itself, is at the bottom of the hill past the bridges.Just keep walking straight until you go up the small hill and reach the right turn.

The cache is a "Thermos Type" container so bring TB's and any other medium sized swag you want to.

I raised the terrain a bit because during Summer, this may be a bit of bushwacking now. :)

CONGRATS To earlypearly89 For FTF!!!!
