Geocache Description:

Rock Glaciers

A Glacier in Disguise

Congratulations to * tomanoble & blazingpathways * for FTF!

In this area you will find a different kind of glacier. This is such a glacier, a glacier with no name. They are not easy to find, because they are also harder to prove they exist.

Fake or Not?

Rock glaciers don't look like typical glaciers. They look more like a plile of rocks or a landslide. Rock is the major ingredient of the glacier and is found in all sizes, mostly small grains. Rock glaciers form diffenently, but they move just like glaciers.

Piece by Piece

Landslides are catastrophic events that happen quickly. The Mountainside you see is being torn apart one rock at a time. Normal erosion and frost action breaks rocks loose creating the Talus Slope. Rock by rock, gravity pulls the mountain down into depris piles.

Hidden Evidence

Water from snow and rain accumulates in the rock debries and then freezes. This mass grows ant begins to slowly creep down the slope. It moves as ice crystals deform and flow just like a true glacier. Most of this rock glacier is hidden behind the trees, but closer inspection would reveal the rounded lobes, which are evidence of its flow.

What you will need to Claim this EarthCache!

Post a Picture of yourself with the Glacier behind you!

OR

1. Get to this location and find the sign that points out the EarthCache.

2. Using the formula below calculate the height of the Glagier and email me the answer.

3. Email me the name of at least one other known Rock Glacier Location, several are listed near GZ

4. Not required but Please take a Picture and post it at the time of the log. You and the Glacier would be nice...

Note: You need two sticks one 12” long and one about 6” long

Height Data Table Simplified version

A} Length of stick used from Line Sighter's eye to the Base of Glacier: _12_ inches = 1 foot

B} Distance from GZ to the base of the glacier: 2.5 miles = 13200 feet = 63360 feet

C} Compute height of the 6" stick: ___from 1 to 6"__ inches -- where top of stick meets your line of sight at top of glacier... and mark the base where the two sticks meet... you will need these two sticks to get the next measurement... note this answer will be less than 6 inches… take home to finish your calculations and email the answer to me…

D} Compute distance between top of 6" stick and end of 12" stick closest to eye: _____ inches SEE FIGURE BELOW This answer should be over 12inches

D2} Equals distance to top of glacier

Note} Convert measurements from feet to inches... and use decimals its easier --- then divide you final answer by 12 to get feet high :)

Formula --------------

If D = C @ A

Then D2 = H @ B

So H2 = H / 12

Then H2 = _______?

See picture on how to use... your sticks…

.

Congratulations to *** for FTF!
