Geocache Description:

A cache in the beautiful traditional village of Kato Perivolakia in a desolate, wild and dry landscape in the mountains of southeast Crete.

Kato Perivolakia used to be a rich agricultural village in the Venetian times. Nowadays it consists of small white stone houses with stairs, niches, arched doorways and flat roofs with terracotta chimney pots. The house yards form tiny gardens with bright-coloured flowers carefully taken care by the few old inhabitants of the village, who today number 21! In the village there is a beautifully renovated coffee shop that also serves home-made food and rents a couple of rooms to visitors seeking quiet and calmness.

Yet more desolate is the old stone hamlet on a ridge at the beginning of the Perivolakia gorge, which descends between great boulders to Kapsa Monastery on the southern coast in 3 hours. You can find cache GC22X8R Perivolakia gorge there. The site has the rough beauty of a fortified village and the cache is placed there.

We strongly suggest you park at the village parking place at: N 35 02.734 E 026 03.600 and take a walk in the narrow streets among the houses and their yards with your camera in hand. To find the cache you have to head towards the entrance of the gorge either through the yards of the village or turning right at the bridge just before entering the village, at: N 35 02.750 E 026 03.513.

The cache is a small plastic container wrapped in a plastic bag. It contains a logbook, a pencil, the geocaching note in Greek and English and some small goodies to trade. Please hide well again.

And a joke, a real incident: While wandering in the village taking pictures, an old lady came out of her house, smiled, said kalimera and asked if we needed any help. We asked her if there was anybody living in the old part of the village and she said “only a couple”. To our question if they were old, her answer was: “Oh, no, they are only over 70”!! You see, the rest of the people in the village are over 90!!
