Hike: to take a long, vigorous walk; tramp or march, esp. through the country, woods, etc.
Hiking is a natural exercise that promotes physical fitness, is economical and convenient, and requires no special equipment.
Hiking is a great body exercise which will greatly improve your overall physical condition.
Hiking is a great way to explore nature. Most people enjoy Hiking as it brings them back to nature. It can bring you to the most beautiful places on earth and into contact with amazing plants and wildlife.
Hiking is an activity that allows you to grow in your knowledge and skills as you progress. In its easiest form, Hiking is a very safe walk using clearly defined trails.
Hiking is the starting point of a whole range of other outdoor activities that require hiking, such as geocaching.
Hiking is a great way to get away from things and forget about the everyday stress in your life. It could be an experience you share with others or something that you do all alone. Perhaps for some of the qualifying hikes you may be interested in joining other geocachers for a group hike.
__________________________________________ Challenge Rules__________________________________________
1) Hike to locations in Washington State where a geocache you have not yet found is the destination. Add up the miles hiked to these caches until you have accumulated 100 miles total. You may continue hiking past the geocache but the extra miles will not be added to the total. Using a geocache as the final destination, and logging a find there, makes it easier for to evaluate the miles and elevation gain for this challenge.
2) The minimum hiking distance considered for this challenge is 5 miles per hike round trip. Round all hikes to the nearest 0.25 miles.
3) The minimum elevation difference between the trailhead and the cache considered for this challenge is 500 feet per hike. Round all hikes to the nearest 100 feet. This may negate some hikes, such as desert hikes that are fairly flat, but the idea for this challenge is to do hikes that have both substantial distance and elevation gain, and it should eliminate the 5 mile walks in a city park.
4) Keep track of the starting coordinates at the trailhead so that the 500 foot elevation gain from trailhead to the cache can be verified. Elevations gained and lost during a hike are not cumulative. The elevation that counts is the maximum elevation minus the minimum elevation of the hike. Those highest/lowest points may be anywhere along the hike. In most cases the low point is the trailhead and the high point is the cache location. There may be some hikes where that is not the case, so in that case it would be helpful to provide the coordinates of the highest and lowest elevation points.
5) Hikes for the purpose of hiding NEW caches qualify if the cache gets published, but hikes to your own existing hides will not be counted. NOTE: Only one new hide allowed per participant.
So for example you may qualify by completing 20 hikes of 5 miles each, or 10 hikes of 10 miles each, or a single 100 mile hike, or an accumulation of any distances as long as each hike meets or exceeds the 5 mile and 500 foot elevation criteria. If possible, try to include hikes that exceed the 5 mile distance and 500 feet elevation by a good margin, to avoid a disqualification if by chance the actual hike distance or elevation change fell short of the requirement.
Final note, this is a Hike challenge. Listing cache destinations in your totals that were achieved by riding horses, mountain bikes, motorcycles, etc not allowed.
To record your progress, create a Bookmark List which includes this cache and the caches/hikes you will be using to qualify. Please use the following format when posting caches/hikes to your Bookmark List:
Hike number - Geocache name
Date:
Trailhead Coordinates:
Distance rounded to nearest 0.25 miles:
Elevation rounded to nearest 100 feet:
An example using the caches and hikes I used to complete this challenge can be found HERE.
There is no need to announce your participation or await verification of your qualifications. After logging your find I will check your Bookmark List and if there are any problems I will contact you.

SAFETY TIPS:
- Hike with a friend or family member. The companionship in the great outdoors is fun and you can encourage one another to meet your fitness goals.
- Take plenty of drinking water. Leave stream, river and lake water for the park wildlife. Although it looks clean and refreshing, mountain stream water can make you ill.
- Let someone back at camp or at home know where you are going and when you plan on returning. Take a mobile phone for emergencies only or to let them know you have returned safely.
- Don’t walk off-trail. Cutting across switchbacks erodes the hillside and eventually destroys the trail. Plus, walking off-trail increases your chance of suffering an injury or getting lost.
- Wildlife lives in all of our parks and forests. Respect the fact that you are visitors in their home.
This challenge should be a lot of fun. Be Safe and Enjoy the Hikes.
