Geocache Description:

This cache is just above the beach and forms part of the Shipwreck Series. For the series methodology and more info visit SS: Shipwreck Series via the related web page link.

The Gustav Adolph was a Norwegian wooden barque of 757 tons, built in 1879 at Arendal and commanded by Capt A. Gjeruldsen. She was wrecked just South of the cache site near the Palmiet River mouth, on 28 June 1902 while on a voyage from Fremantle to Cape Town with a load of timber. The captain and three men drowned.

The two crosses made from parts of the wreck is at the bottom of the path leading from the parking area. Unfortunately the commemoration plaque, like most, seems to have disappeared.

Ref: Cape Times, 1 and 2 July 1902.
