Geocache Description:

Inspiration:

Fellow Geocacher Martin Pedersen is on a diet. Martin is determined to lose 100 pounds by the end of the year. He’s using geocaching to shed the weight. His aim is to find 1000 geocaches and walk 2500 kilometers (1554 miles).

THE PLAN:

Geocaching events for our own "NoVAGO Geocaching Diet". Each event allows the Geocacher to work towards their own individual goals. While not required, please post your goals and progress toward them in your log posts so that we can encourage and celebrate our progress!

Our Event: Healthy Barbecue – Make Your Own Kabobs!

As with other NoVAGO picnic events, we will be having a potluck meal. It is hoped that the event attendees will bring something to add to the meal.

In an effort to reach our Geocaching Diet goals we are going to try to eat better at these events! We would like to set up “Make Your Own Kabobs” potluck tables for these events. Kabobs (or Kebobs) are pieces of meat, poultry, fish and/or vegetables, threaded onto skewers and grilled. Yummy!

Grilled Vegetables:

The best part about grilling vegetables is that you don't have to worry about overcooking them - vegetables seem to taste better grilled than they do cooked any other way. Marinating vegetables will help them caramelize better when they're grilled, and it's the caramelization that brings the best flavors. Just submerge the vegetables in marinade for about an hour before putting them on the grill. If you don't have that kind of prep time, just coat the vegetables ever so lightly with a little olive oil or canola oil.

In your “Will Attend” log please list how many will be in your group and what you plan to bring for the potluck.

Examples of needed items:

  • Cubed Meats (chicken, beef, fish, lamb, etc…)
  • Red, white, or sweet onion, sliced into 1/2-inch thick rounds.
  • Small cherry tomatoes
  • Corn on the cob (take off the husks and silks)
  • Mushrooms; whole or small
    • Grill portabellas like a burger or cut them into thick slices
    • Grill small mushrooms strung on a skewer or kabob.
  • Eggplant, cut lengthwise into 1/4-inch slices.
  • Zucchini, cut lengthwise into 1/4-inch slices.
  • Asparagus spears. Just trim off the white end and grill the spears whole.
  • Pita Bread
  • Fresh Salads
  • Fresh Fruit
  • Trail Mix
  • Water
  • Paper Plates
  • Napkins
  • Plasticware
  • Charcoal
  • Charcol lighter
  • Table cloths

Grill Master

We need a volunteer grill master and grilling tools

Barbecues aren’t all about the food – they’re about the company as well. Enjoying yourself contributes to overall good health. This means that medically, the more Geocachers the better!

Located in Ida Lee Park in Leesburg, Virginia, the pavilion has a capacity of 45 people with open space around it. There are two charcoal grills and a large playground. There is no electricity or running water, but a port-a-pottie is available during the season (April-October).

Let's meet at 10:30 AM at the pavilion This is NOT a NoVAGO sponsored event so the meat will not be provided as it is at NoVAGO picnics. Please bring what you want and maybe some to share as well. Remember the theme is healthy lifestyles so choose your foods wisely.
