North Walsham & Dilham Canal No.1 Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Captain Bird's Eye: As some of this trail was archived by an over zealous reviewer whilst I was away over the summer, including caches which were perfectly ok and the one that contained the bonus coordinates, it has become necessary to archive the rest. Thanks for all the appreciative comments it has received over the years. CBE

Geocache Description:

A challenging series of 16 caches on a circular walk around the section of the North Walsham and Dilham Canal between Honing Common and Tonnage Bridge. In my opinion this is one of the walks which really exemplifies the Norfolk countryside and is one of the most attractive and interesting in the county.

The walk is about 4 miles and is entirely on public footpaths with no road walking necessary at all. The terrain is partly the Weaver's Way Long Distance Footpath which follows the disused railway and the rest meadow land footpaths which in summer are easy but some sections in winter can be very muddy. There are a couple of stiles to negotiate between No.6 and No.7 and another between No.9 and No. 10.

There are 3 caches by others on this route making it possible to do 19 in a morning or afternoon's walk. You won't find them all, of course, as some are quite challenging. I don't doubt someone will think they can prove me wrong. Well good luck to them. 15 of the NW&DC caches are traditional caches and No 16 is a bonus Mystery cache. It is located somewhere between No. 15 and No. 1. The coordinates for this and a hint can be found in one of the other 15 caches. I'm not telling you which one.

If you want to attempt all the caches, including the bonus, I would advise you to do this series clockwise, starting with No.1 near Honing Common, where I suggest you park, (See waypoints in No.1) walking along the Weavers Way to East Ruston, (if you feel the need for sustenance, the Butchers Arms is about half a mile detour from here, adding a mile to your walk. (See Waypoints in No.1) crossing the meadows to Tonnage Bridge and back up the other side of the canal on the path which runs along side it to Honing Lock where you cross the canal again and back along the few hundred yards of the Weavers Way you started out on from Honing Common.

All the containers are different and all but two of the 16 are micros containing logbook only so BYOP, please.

Don't forget to check each cache for the Coordinates and hint for the final bonus cache.

Most of the hints are cryptic so if you wish to use them you may wish to ponder them before you set off.

Magnetic Micro (usually but temporarily not)
