It's more than 90 years since the guns fell silent on the Western Front, marking the end of what became known as the Great War.
Almost immediately, a grieving young nation set about commemorating the sacrifice of so many of its best and brave.
This movement to commemorate the losses began very early 1916/1917 By the 1930's there were nearly 1,500 of them around Australia. On average, one for almost every 40 men who died.
Sixty thousand died and none of their remains were brought home until the Unknown Soldier, one single Australian, was returned here in 1993 75 years after the end of the war.
These memorials, in the small country towns will always remain, to remind us of the ultimate sacrifice.
