There is always sun shining on those
peaks.
Móskarðahnúkar are peaks in the easternmost part of Esja Massive.
Whenever you look at them, you feel like sun is shining there. This
is due to ligh colours of rhyolite that builds Móskarðahnúkar
which are part of a 1 - 2 million years old extinct volcano. The
highest of them reaches 807 m.
The easiest access is from the south, from the recommended parking
place at river Skarðsá. However steep the hike isn't too difficult,
the distance is about 7 km both ways and will take you 3 to 4
hours.
Alternative way to Móskarðahnúkar starts in Möðruvellir í Kjós,
north from the mountain.
It is also a beautiful hike to continue west along the edge to
Esja.
Good hiking boots, water, snack, raingear, map
and a compass are essential.
Climbing Móskarðahnúkar in snow season isn't possible unless
with proper equipment and winter alpinism experience.
The cache is hidden at the second
peak from east,
a few metres under the top. You don't have to leave the path to
find it. I recommend to use the photo hint below.
Please, be careful and keep in
mind that Icelandic nature is very fragile and that the weather can change within
minutes.
