Geocache Description:

A 3/4mile round trip.
Locations 1 and 2 can be very muddy after rain and have unfenced drops.
The cache is a small locktop container with small swaps and logbook.

The first location at 54* 59.593/001* 24.164 is a machine gun nest overlooking South Shields long beach.Various gun positions and trenches can be seen to the South and also the concrete doughnut which once housed a “disappearing” gun. This was a 1887 experiment in coastal artillery,a 6” breech loader mounted on a Clark-Maxim air powered platform.
The concept was to house the gun below the rim of the doughnut before pumping up the platform to lay & fire, then dropping down out of sight for reloading. The system was found to be too slow and was replaced by an Elswick Hydro-pneumatic system.
The present gun is a model built by local Engineering apprentices.
Look for the door and count the ribs. A=Ribs-10

Location 2 is a pillbox at 54* 59.594/001* 24.185.Once hidden behind the rock,it has been undermined by the sea and collapsed onto the beach.Look for a bench for Joe and the date BCDE-BCC0

Location 3 is a machine gun position perched on the edge of Trow Quarry at 54* 59.466/001* 23.935,the bench this time is to Bill with a date of BF/0B/BC-DD/0E/D000.

The cache is at 54* 59.A(C-B)F 001* 23.FBD
Do the sums and head towards the cache and you will see on the right a long mound which hides a concrete gun battery which had two 9” guns, these, with the battery at Tynemouth commanded the approaches to the Tyne.
Continuing South a spine of cliff juts out towards the sea,a line of posts run along the top. These are not fence posts, but the remains of a handrail which assisted Coastguard personnel going to and from a lookout built onto the end of the cliff.Sea action has undercut the cliff and the concrete lookout has collapsed onto the foreshore.
On the final stage PLEASE! use established trails as far as possible, so as not to lead future cachers and muggles to the cache.
The cache has been selected as a Teleport site and swaps may or may not be transported in an instant to Milton Keynes courtesy of "theGardeners."
