This simple geocache is dedicated to a lesser known, yet miraculous invention of Tom Swift, the famous boy genius. This is a walk-up (but not a drive-up) cache. Be careful; auto traffic can be heavy near the cache, so keep your dog leashed and your children under firm control. Parking is the same as for nearby caches "Round peg and Square log" (GC10J4D) and "42 acres" (GC10J3B) by jwheels1. In fact, this urban style cache makes a fun compliment to both of those excellent backwoods hides.
Our story opens in the Swift family household:
"Grave tidings, Tom!" intoned Mr. Swift funereally, brutally putting down his coffee cup as he folded his morning newspaper and laid it to rest upon the table. "This article states that Boy Scout enrollments have been significantly lower over the past seven days...", he continued weakly. "Couldn't that have an… ahem… unexpected effect on the boys' behavior?" he queried.
"Absolutely; it's a hairy situation indeed", inferred Tom Swift, the famous boy inventor. "And, without enough Scouts, our entire Country will be at a loss", he said winsomely. "However, I haven't been clowning around", Tom continued icily, "and I may have a solution already" he added fluidly. "I've been working on a top-secret electro-mechanical device which could actually perform Boy Scout related duties", he machinated.
"You mean... like setting up camp?" inquired Tom's father intently.
"No, it can't do nearly everything a real Scout can, but I've programmed my gadget using the Scout Code", Tom dashed off, "and I've got it doing a good deed every day. It might just fill in the gap until we can recruit more real boys to join the Scouts", he rejoindered.
True to his word, Tom Swift installed his new Automatic Substitute Boy Scout posthaste, and was delighted to discover that it performed well, if in a limited fashion.
As it turned out, the slump in Boy Scout enrollments proved to be only temporary, and before long, Tom realized that there'd be no real need for his Automatic Substitute Boy Scout after all. "I guess I can scratch it off my list of great inventions", Tom admitted crossly. Never-the-less, several of the amazing devices were installed, and they remain in place to this very day, automatically doing their daily good deeds and being prepared... as every real Boy Scout should.
