Geocache Description:

Short multi, accessible to all, but wheelchair users need to stick to the road and not use the footpath because of the narrow posts at each end of the path. Please make sure the container is replaced the right way up to stop water getting in.

Church of St. Mary, Motcombe, Dorset.

The parish of Motcombe is situated in what used to be the Forest of Gillingham. This forest stretched from Motcombe nearly up to Shaftesbury. St. Mary's was originally served by curates from the Gillingham parish, but was given its own separate parish in 1883. Before this though, the church was knocked down and re-built by the Marquis of Westminster in 1846, and consecrated in 1847. (and that was properly built, not thrown together in a hurry, as much of the new building is today) It was consecrated by the Bishop of Salisbury, the Rt Reverend Edward Denison, and dedicated to St. Mary. Outside the front door is what remains of an old preaching cross, dating from the 14th century it's not hard to understand why it looks as it does today. Supposedly, Friars would gather here to make sure they had everything they needed with them, before entering the church.
