A home made cache.
Arley is my favourite spot on the river Severn and I’ve been visiting here for many years and have lots of very fond memories of the place.
This cache is placed where the old ferry used to cross the river before it closed in 1964 and was replaced in 1972 by the footbridge lower down. The old ferry was moved to Bewdley Severnside North where it was used as a landing stage for rowing boats until it sank some years later in floods.
When you get to GZ take a seat facing the river and if you look to your right you will see a concrete block that held a metal structure that carried a steel cable to a similar structure on the other side of the river. From this cable the ferry was attached by means of a pulley so it could go from one side of the river to the other with only the power of the current and it’s rudder to guide it carrying foot passengers, and years earlier waggons and carts.
So just sit there awhile and take in the sights....…and the sounds....…and when there are no muggles about, go for the cache!
Then if you feel like a gentle stroll you can cross over the footbridge and take a short walk upriver where there is a cache called Severn Oak(Worcs) GC9A48 placed by Jilly & Gray. And also the Arley Loop.
A longer walk down river, through the woods will take you to Trimpley where there are other caches.
There is ample car parking on both sides of the river depending on which side you are approaching from.
Arley is a very popular place and can get very busy at certain times so stealth may be required.
