Badge #1770 Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

4wheelin_fool: Well OReviewer checked further and said that Groundspeak indicated that permission is needed for that side of the highway. I can likely get permission from the FOP, but not the military, so I'm going to archive this for now and see what I can do. Although I don't agree with the decision, I do understand and respect it.

What I don't understand, nor respect, is the new state policy, especially for something a few feet from the side of a state highway. So in response, I held a COTI. Yes, a COTI. That's Cache Out, Trash In event. I went and found a dozen 20 year olds or so, out carousing in the forest, and had them assemble 22 bags of household garbage, 814 bottles and cans, along with some construction debris, and other "stuff", from their neighborhoods, and we distributed it all throughout the forest while whooping it up, yelling and screaming. (and against the wishes of t32). Later there was a naked co-ed dance of drunkeness mud caked folly, in which we had around an illegal bonfire made from live trees that we hacked down and doused with gasoline while listening to Metallica and Rihanna blasting away.

Can't say that the effect of our party was noticeable, as that has always been going on, and it doesn't appear that the state cares too much about it.

Geocache Description:

Driving West on Route 70 there is a very slight incline and near the top there is a small concrete marker which has been there awhile. I noticed it a few years ago and recently it has been remade and added to. It is in memory to a 23 year old police officer that died 35 years ago.

The cache should be a quick find, as it is not too far away. Be careful stopping. The dirt road nearby across the street doesnt go in far, and comes back out only a dozen yards down the road.

Patrolman Robert Tobias of the Manchester township police department, badge #1770 was struck and killed Saturday, May 17, 1975 by a vehicle while conducting a traffic stop on State Highway 70 at 1745 hours. Patrolman Tobias was standing five feet off of the roadway when a third vehicle left the travel lanes, sideswiped the patrol car and stopped vehicle, and struck Patrolman Tobias, who was standing next to the driver's door of the stopped vehicle. Patrolman Tobias was killed instantly. The driver of the vehicle that struck him was charged with causing death by auto, operating an unsafe vehicle and possession of a controlled substance.

Patrolman Tobias had been with the agency for one year and was survived by his parents, brother and two sisters.
