Located between Annesley and Selston close to the M1.
There are several other caches close by... a chance to grab some additional numbers !
Across the road there is a site of Special Scientific Interest which has provoked much local interest over the past few years.
Known as the Bentink Void the area was earmarked to become the Largest Landfill site in Europe
Local groups in the surrounding villages have fought several attempts to gain planning permission and are still fighting any application to use this beautiful site as a Tip.
Health reasons are paramount as the void is so deep here the bottom is below the natural water table. Any dumping of toxic material will seriously contaminate the surrounding area as well as spoiling a natural beauty spot and wildlife sanctuary.
If you have a few minutes follow the footpath across the road to take in the view of this splendid site.
Be warned however... to attempt to walk down to the centre of the site should only be attempted by those physically able. The slopes can be very steep and drop over 300 feet to the lake below
Update: July 15th 2010 It has recently been announced that the SSI Status has been Upheld and that this Natural Beauty spot is to remain. There will be no further applications allowed in the future to allow dumping of waste here. VICTORY !!!!
